United Local awarded $5,000 grant

HANOVERTON — United Local High School has been awarded a $5,000 grant through the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio’s Civic Education Fund.

The grant, awarded on May 8, will support an authentic learning experience designed to connect students with local government leaders and engage them in a hands-on civic project that benefits the Columbiana County community.

The initiative aims to empower students with real-world knowledge of civic processes and to inspire them to take an active role in public service. Through this opportunity, students will work closely with local officials to identify community needs, propose solutions, and implement a project that has a tangible impact.

“This grant provides our students with a meaningful opportunity to engage directly with local government leaders and to see firsthand how civic involvement can make a real difference,” said Danielle Burch, government teacher at United Local High School. “We’re excited to guide students through a project that not only deepens their understanding of public service but also benefits our greater Columbiana County community.”

The Civic Education Fund, a part of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, supports programs that foster civic understanding, responsibility, and leadership among young people across the region.

Starting at $2.99/week.
