County Democratic party chairman sentenced on OVI charge
LISBON — Columbiana County Democratic Party Chairman Charley Kidder was ordered to serve three days in the county jail beginning Friday after pleading no contest and being found guilty of operating a vehicle impaired.
Kidder, 48, of Lisbon, appeared with his defense attorney Troy Barnett Friday morning before retired Carroll County Judge John Campell, who was assigned by the Ohio Supreme Court as visiting judge since the two Columbiana County Municipal Court judges recused themselves.
Attorney Edward Czopur, who was assigned as special prosecutor for the case, met with Barnett prior to the start of the hearing, Barnett spoke with Kidder and both attorneys met behind closed doors with the judge.
As part of the plea, another OVI charge was dismissed. Kidder had originally been charged with a higher level OVI second offense and OVI breath second offense after allegedly testing at 0.158 blood alcohol concentration during a breath test after a traffic stop at 10:20 p.m. March 6 on North Market Street in Lisbon near Pine Street.
Kidder was fined $375 and sentenced to 180 days in the county jail, with 174 days suspended and credit for three days served in a driver intervention program, leaving the three days to serve in jail. His driver’s license was suspended for one year retroactive to March 6, with driving privileges granted, and he was ordered to complete 10 hours community service. The ignition interlock system previously installed while the case was pending will be removed from his vehicle.
When asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Kidder responded “not at this time your honor.”
Kidder’s attorney withdrew a motion to suppress filed earlier this week seeking to have all evidence thrown out.
Kidder works as a defense attorney and also serves as a board member of the Columbiana County Board of Elections.
