Wellsville council takes steps toward collecting bulk shipping fees

WELLSVILLE — Wellsville Village Council members adopted a resolution during Tuesday’s meeting that authorizes Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah to establish a separate fund for the deposit of bulk shipping fees the village can collect from companies who ship materials through the village.

Once the account is established through the county, the village will be able to start enforcing the ordinance in place allowing them to collect the fees for the transportation of bulk materials in the village for construction, maintenance and repair of the village’s streets and roads, for extraordinary police and fire protection services and for liability insurance coverage for potential claims against the village resulting from the transportation of bulk goods and other professional services.

Council members also approved the payment of bills totaling $5,518.74

There was discussion among Mayor Bob Boley and the council members regarding what to do with the WWI Memorial at the cemetery as it needs repair and is no longer used for services. Council members discussed whether to repair it, build a new one or put the funds toward the chapel located at the cemetery. No decision was made, and the matter was tabled to be discussed at a later meeting.

There was also discussion over the potential purchase of security cameras for the marina and the 18th Street Park. Council Member Bill Taft said he had estimates for $30,000 for the marina and $7,000 for the park. After discussion, it was decided the council would seek additional estimates before making any decisions.

Council Member Aaron Smith, who chairs the Park Committee, said he would like to invest in improvements at the park, but not until security is in place.

Boley said the village has received cold patch material and the road department has been working on patching the road.

Fire Chief Barry Podwel said the fire department had five calls for February which is one more than they had for the month last year and there has been a total of 16 calls for the year which is up from last year at 12 calls. Four of the calls for February were for medical/ambulance assists and one was a CO detector call.

Smith noted that there will be a Garden Club meeting in council chambers on March 29 at 11 a.m., and that the club is looking for more members. Anyone interested in being a member can attend the meeting.

The Wellsville Village Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in council chambers at Wellsville Village Hall, 1200 Main St. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 1.
