Strong storm downs power lines, uproots trees in Salem

COLUMBIANA COUNTY — A storm with 70-mph wind gusts left over 500 households in Columbiana County without electricity on Sunday. The storm was part of a long line of severe weather that moved across the eastern portion of the state late Sunday morning into the early afternoon. According to First Energy’s website, 528 county customers were still experiencing power outages as of 6 p.m. All outages were reported north of Calcutta with parts of Lisbon, Hanoverton, Columbiana and East Palestine among the impacted areas.
The Salem area was the hardest hit location with the majority of outages as well as downed power lines on South Lincoln Avenue between Franklin Street and Southeast Boulevard. The Salem Police Department Facebook page reported that portion of Lincoln remained closed while crews worked to clear the roadways. Salem residents also reported downed power lines on East Perry Avenue and uprooted trees on West 10th Street.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 12:39 p.m. on Sunday. Locations impacted included Salem, Uhrichsville, St. Clairsville, Barnesville, Cadiz, Carrollton, Freeport, Dennison, Augusta, Salineville, Bethesda, Malvern, Hopedale, Flushing, Scio, Adena, Jewett, Bergholz, Amsterdam and Belmont.
Columbiana County was among 11 counties under a tornado watch on Sunday. That watch expired at 4 p.m.
The severe weather brought with it cooler temperatures as today’s high is expected to not reach into the 50s. Warmer weather will return Tuesday.
