Jury trial moved to June 3 for Wellsville man accused of attempted murder, other charges

LISBON — The jury trial for a Wellsville man accused of attempted murder and other charges for severely beating a woman and allegedly trying to start a fire is now set for June 3.

Michael Stacy, 35, 19th Street, appeared Friday in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court before Judge Megan Bickerton for a status hearing. He was in the custody of sheriff’s deputies, accompanied by his attorney Charley Kidder.

Kidder asked for a continuance, which Bickerton granted, with Kidder saying at this point, negotiations were ongoing. Stacy signed a time waiver of his right to a speedy trial.

His jury trial had previously been set for April 1.

Bickerton set a new final status hearing for 11:40 a.m. May 19.

Besides the first-degree felony attempted murder count, the charges against Stacy include felonious assault, a second-degree felony, two counts of attempted aggravated arson, one a second-degree felony and one a third-degree felony, third-degree felony abduction and fourth-degree felony trespass in a habitation when a person is present or likely to be present.

Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino said previously that the defendant hit the woman “severely enough that we believe he was going to kill her.”

He said the defendant trespassed on the property and used a wooden object to hit the woman over the head.

When police arrived at the property, Abruzzino said officers found all the burners on the stove on, wide open, leading to the attempted arson charges. The second-degree felony count involved the risk of harm to the woman and the third-degree felony count involved the possible risk to the home.

Stacy remains jailed under a $100,000 cash or surety bond.

Starting at $2.99/week.
