Southern Local blood drive

Southern Local High School will host its last blood drive of the school year this Tuesday and is calling on the community to help. The National Honor Society student organization is hosting the event in conjunction with the American Red Cross and the collection will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school gym. The site is located at 38095 state Route 39 in Salineville and advisor Bob Shansky is looking for volunteers to give their time and help save lives. He said NHS members will man the registration table and canteen and will also aid donors while Red Cross medical personnel will oversee the collection. Pre-registration is available but walk-ins are also welcome. Donors must be at least 16 years old and minors require parental permission to contribute. Participants may donate whole blood or complete the Power Red contribution that collects red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets. Donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A-Negative, B-Negative or O blood, plus they may use the Rapid Pass on the day of the drive and answer questions to reduce their wait time. The blood collected is used by hospitals to support those in need, from cancer patients to injury victims. Additionally, the Red Cross will provide $10 gift cards by email and successful donations get A1C testing, while scholarships are also given at the school based upon the level of donations. To make an appointment, call (800) RED-CROSS or go online to RedCrossBlood.org and enter Sponsor Keyword:southernlocal. Shansky may also be contacted at 330-679-2305, Ext. 4002 for information.

Starting at $2.99/week.
