Town & Country Garden Club
Last week there were 16 members present at the March meeting of the Town & Country Garden Club of East Palestine. Donna Holzer, vice president, welcomed members and said the blessing, before inviting all to enjoy the snack which was prepared by Aubrin Strohecker, Lynn Guy and Debbie Hall. The decorations, along with the snack, shared a St. Patrick’s Day theme – Reuben Casserole, Mint Oreo dessert, and green punch to name a few of the food items. After catching up while enjoying the snack, the meeting was then called to order.
The group then stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Under Old Business, committee reports were given, with Secretary Bonnie Davis stating she would email the minutes to members. Treasurer Susan Dellavole gave the treasurer’s report, which was unanimously approved. Corresponding Secretary Aubrin Strohecker gave the correspondence report, with two birthday cards sent, and she read a Thank You which was received from Social Concerns. Ways & Means chair Dellavole discussed selling $25 gift cards for Sutherin’s Greenhouse at the Mother’s Day Plant Sale, which will be held May 10. A motion was made, seconded, voted on, and approved. Members were also told that if they want to donate craft items to be sold at the plant sale, they will take home what they brought if it does not sell. Civic Committee Co-Chair Donna Holzer then mentioned how the pine in the planters is still frozen in the dirt, and for members to try to think of what they can do or put around the holly bushes next year that wouldn’t get frozen in the dirt, so they can be cleaned out sooner. Warm days are coming this week, and members were asked to check the planters to see if the pine is able to be removed. Spring flags will also be placed in the planters soon. The Watering Schedule was then passed around to members so they could sign up for their days to help water the planters. The club depends on member involvement in order to accomplish its goals. The club still has no idea what is happening at the triangle yet. Kathy Byard gave an update for the Home Tour Committee which met at the end of February. The Home Tours always takes place the second weekend of November, with this year’s dates falling on Nov. 14 and 15. The club is still in the beginning stages of planning, but have several new ideas it will be incorporating. The ticket cost will still be the same this year at $15 per person. Advertising will start in August.
Under New Business: The club discussed the 150 year EP Anniversary meeting that was two weeks prior, with the next meeting in two days. After that meeting, the club will know more details on the dates, activities etc. Members do know that they will be selling their Annual Meat Raffle tickets, along with bottles of water. Next month’s meeting (April 14), members will be filling bags with goodies to be given to the residents of Covington. Members were reminded to bring items needed to be placed in these bags. Also, Social Concerns donations for April is Jello. The spring Fling, sponsored by the Chamber, will be on April 19. At this event, the club will have an activity for the children of decorating a clay pot, filling with dirt and planting seeds. A motion was made, seconded, voted on and passed to do this activity.
Being it was a March meeting, some members dressed in green and members had a few fun activities that they participated in. Bonnie Davis had a Trivia game which Lorrie Smith won. Aubrin Strohecker had a jar filled with Andes Mints to guess the number – Dellavole was the winner of that contest.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on April 14 at The First Church of Christ. All interested in learning more about the club are always welcome.
