USA Career Day slated for Febuary 19
SALINEVILLE — Utica Shale Academy Career Day will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19 throughout the school, which is located in the first block of East Main Street.
Students in grades 10 through 12 can meet with representatives from local trades as they embark on joining the workforce.
The community school works with grades 7 through 12 in a mix of blended learning and hands-on education, providing career technical opportunities from AC/DC electric to welding.
Technical specialist Ashley Canann, the day’s organizer, explained it will be multi-faceted. “There are three parts (to) the day. One is the student spotlight, where students will have an opportunity to show off their skills in the trades to the companies.”
Then she explained students rotate among all the companies, where they view a presentation, learn about job availability and skills needed.
The day concludes with mock interviews among the junior and senior students.
Among the companies slated to participate are Ascent Resources, ONEi, API Ohio, Diversified Energy, Ergon, Encino Energy, MPLX and Williams in addition to the Ohio Oil and Gas Association.
Canann said that she was inspired to create the day as another way to prepare students for employment. “Our students already are learning at USA the physical skills needed to gt a job, but we wanted to support our students even further by teaching them soft skills needed for employment and give them an opportunity to learn more from actual companies in our area.”
She hopes to make career day an annual event.
