Steubenville man facing aggravated murder, other charges in Wellsville fatal shooting

LISBON — The man suspected of shooting 30-year-old Robert E. Herron to death on Sept. 9 in Wellsville is now facing aggravated murder and other charges related to the homicide.

Jeno L. Wall, also known as Mally, 34, of Steubenville, was served Tuesday morning with the secret indictment issued Monday by the Columbiana County Grand Jury for unclassified felonies of aggravated murder and murder and third-degree felony intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case, along with firearm specifications for allegedly using a firearm to cause Herron’s death.

Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino and Wellsville Police Chief Ed Wilson announced the indictment in a written press release Tuesday.

Wall is currently incarcerated in Conneaut on a parole violation for a 2021 case from Jefferson County for discharging a firearm near a prohibited area.

“We expect him to be transferred from Lake Erie Correctional Institution down to our jail at some point in the next several weeks,” Abruzzino said by phone.

Arraignment on the charges is expected to occur at 1 p.m. Jan. 2 in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court. Abruzzino said bond is being set at $1 million.

If convicted, Wall could be facing life in prison without the possibility of parole for the aggravated murder, according to Abruzzino. He could face a mandatory three years for each of the two firearm specifications.

“Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 9, 2024, officers from the Wellsville Police Department responded to a call of possible shots fired on Tenth Street. Officers found Herron fatally wounded behind a residential garage,” the press release said.

The aggravated murder count alleges that Wall “did purposely, and with prior calculation and design, cause the death of another, to wit: Robert E. Herron.” The murder count alleges that he purposely caused the death.

Abruzzino said the intimidation charge stems from alleged actions by Wall following the shooting.

“While Mr. Wall has been indicted, this is an ongoing investigation. We ask anyone with information about that evening to contact the Wellsville Police Department at 330-532-1522,” he said.

In the press release, Abruzzino credited the work of the Wellsville Police Department and members of the Columbiana County Major Crimes Task Force for their investigative efforts which led to the indictment.

Without county entities coming together and utilizing the expertise of fellow investigators, he said this could have been a longer process. The indictment comes just three months after the homicide occurred.

This is the third aggravated murder indictment issued by the county grand jury this year.

Christopher Morrison, 35, Shadyside Road, East Liverpool, was sentenced in September to life in prison with parole eligibility in 25 years for murdering and dismembering his wife and mother of his three children just a week before Christmas last year in Liverpool Township. He was taken into custody on Dec. 20, the day her remains were discovered, then indicted in January.

Charges against him included aggravated murder, murder, two counts tampering with evidence, gross abuse of a corpse and a firearm specification.

In May, William P. Long Jr., 51, North Market Street, Lisbon, was indicted for aggravated murder and murder, both unclassified felonies, along with a first-degree felony of discharging a firearm upon a roadway, and firearm specifications for using a gun for each count in the Nov. 29, 2023 death of 50-year-old Michelle A. Long, his ex-wife who was a Leetonia teacher and coach.

His case remains pending in Common Pleas Court before Judge Megan Bickerton, who also handled the Morrison case. A status hearing is set for 9 a.m. April 14, with the jury trial set for 9 a.m. April 29.
