Southern blood drives

The Southern Local High School National Honor Society is looking for donors to give of themselves during the first of two blood drives this Wednesday. The NHS is working in conjunction with the American Red Cross and activities will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gym of the high school, which is located at 38095 State Route 39 in Salineville. Members of the student organization will oversee stations including registration and the canteen while Red Cross medical personnel will conduct the blood collection. NHS Advisor Bob Shansky said volunteers are needed because supplies are in great demand. “We’d like to get at least 40 units and are asking people to donate. Everything they donate is used and there is a dire need for blood,” Shansky added. “This is the first one we’re doing and we’ll do another one in March.” Blood donations provide red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma to assist people in need of transfusions, while hosting the collection makes the school eligible to obtain scholarships for graduating seniors. Walk-ins are welcome, but donors may also register by downloading the blood donor app at redcrossblood.org or by calling 800-733-2767 (1-800-RED-CROSS) or Shansky at 330-679-2305, Ext. 4002, to obtain a QR code.
