Hopes high for third installment of Columbiana Cemetery tour
COLUMBIANA — The Historical Society of Columbiana and Fairfield Township is hoping Chapter 3 of its guided luminary lit walking tour of Columbiana Cemetery is as successful as previous years at raising funds.
“Citizens of Columbiana Cemetery, Chapter 3” will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1.
According to Deborah Firestone Himes, who co-chairs the society with Jay Groner, all gross proceeds from this event benefit the society’s capital improvement fund. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for youth under age 12.
The first hay wagon loaded with ticket holders will exit Birdfish Brewing shortly after 4 p.m. with the last wagon departing around 7:15 p.m.
After the hay wagon drops up tourists at the Firestone Memorial, where the tour begins, guides accompanies guests to 10 different graves, where a speaker with recount the dearly departed’s story.
This year’s citizenry includes an abolitionist, farmer, attorney, city manager, law enforcement and a businessman to name a few, Himes explained.
The Columbiana schools’ National Honor Society and Middle School Junior Honor Society along with the Interact team will be assisting with this event.
The tour concludes at the site of the historical 1890 chapel restoration project, where tourists then are returned to Birdfish Brewing via the hay wagons that were courtesy of Catalpa Grove farms and the Mercer family.
Back at Birdfish Brewing, tourists can buy chances at a basket drawing, and $1 from each pour of Harvey’s Finest Ale will benefit the capital improvement fund.
Food truck Red Rican, which offers a variety of Puerto Rican food like empanadas for sale, will be on hand.
