Two Salem non-profits to participate in Ohio Open Doors program

SALEM — Two Salem non-profits are set to participate in the biennial Ohio Open Doors program.

The program, which was created by the Ohio History Connection in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act and promote “pride in Ohio’s heritage,” will see free events held at historic sites across Ohio from Sept. 6-15.

“Ohio Open Doors shares stories of important landmarks and interesting sites right in our backyards, highlighting the history and unique nature of some of Ohio’s most treasured places,” said Diana Welling, director of the Ohio History Connection’s State Historic Preservation Office and State Historic Preservation Officer.

This year’s program will see two Salem non-profits — the Burchfield Homestead and the Salem Historical Society — host open door events.

The Burchfield Homestead Society will be hosting an event named “If Walls Could Talk” and the Burchfield Homestead Museum on East Fourth Street from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 7, where visitors can enjoy “a special exhibit of wallpapers that Charles E. Burchfield designed in the 1920s” for the Buffalo, New York based M.H. Birge and Sons before shifting his focused to watercolor painting full-time. Attendees will also make their own wallpaper samples. For questions or additional information visit www.burchfieldhomestead.com, or call 330-717-0092.

The Historical Society will host an event titled “Doors to Salem’s History” from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 and 15 at the Pierce Building on South Broadway. The event is set to feature free tours, live painting demonstration of the Pearce building, live music, and “an exclusive behind-the-scenes look,” at the Quakertown Trolley followed by a question and answer session with a trolley driver. For questions or additional information call 330-337-8514, or visit www.salemhistoricalsociety.org.

Starting at $2.99/week.
