Four more townships added to list banning solar, wind farms
LISBON — Columbiana County commissioners added Elkrun, Hanover, Knox and Madison to the list of townships banning large solar facilities and large wind farms in their unincorporated areas.
The vote took place Wednesday morning with no comment from commissioners. The approval of the bans means that 15 of the 18 townships in the county won’t allow construction of the large solar facilities and large wind farms within their unincorporated borders.
The three remaining townships, St. Clair, Liverpool and Yellow Creek, submitted resolutions for the bans, with commissioners accepting the resolutions Wednesday. The date for the public hearing on the bans will be announced next week.
As part of the requirements related to the public hearing, letters regarding the bans will be sent to local libraries and schools in the affected areas and advertised.
Bans had already been approved for the unincorporated areas of Butler, Center, Middleton, Salem, Unity, Wayne, Washington, Fairfield, Franklin, Perry and West townships.
The Kensington Solar project, located in Franklin Township, won’t be affected by the ban in Franklin Township because the vote came after the project plans were already submitted. The project remains pending before the Ohio Power Siting Board.
In other business, commissioners approved a Roadway Use and Maintenance Agreement (RUMA) in Butler Township for the county engineer related to travel on a portion of Georgetown Road and Rochester Road to the Lehwald Well Connect oil and gas development site.
The commissioners reappointed Commissioner Tim Weigle and county Juvenile Court Administrator Dane Walton as trustees to the Multi-County Juvenile Attention System Board and appointed Lynsie Beagle, Nancy Francis and Belinda Niswonger to the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board.
After the meeting, it was announced that the commissioners will cancel their meeting on Sept. 6.
Their next meeting will be 9 a.m. Aug. 30 at the courthouse in downtown Lisbon.
