County man facing attempted murder charge

LISBON — A man accused of stabbing a woman in the neck in East Liverpool on July 7 is now facing a first-degree felony attempted murder charge.

The Columbiana County Grand Jury issued the new charge Wednesday against Joseph Boyer, 50, Ogden Street, who has remained in the county jail under a $100,000 cash or surety bond since his arrest the day of the incident.

The indictment alleged that Boyer attempted to cause the death of Chrystal Petty as a result of committing or attempting to commit felonious assault. He was also indicted for felonious assault, a second-degree felony, for knowingly causing or attempting to cause harm to Petty by means of a deadly weapon.

The weapons specifically noted included a 12-inch Farberware chef’s knife and a 9-inch serrated kitchen knife.

He was also indicted for domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony, related to the incident and had previously been convicted of domestic violence the previous month on June 2 in East Liverpool Municipal Court. He had been ordered to serve 160 days in jail after his probation was dishonorably terminated for two previous domestic violence cases.

An affidavit said Petty was stabbed three times in the neck and once in the wrist at 405 Ogden St., East Liverpool when the July 7 incident occurred.

According to the affidavit, she said she was sleeping when Boyer allegedly came into her bedroom and began assaulting her by grabbing her by the hair. The physical altercation went from the bedroom to the living room where Boyer allegedly grabbed a serrated bread knife and stabbed her in the neck and wrist while on the couch, causing serious physical harm.

Police had received a call at 7:27 a.m. from the hospital saying they had a stabbing victim. When officers spoke to Petty, she identified Boyer as her attacker and police then responded to the Ogden Street home where they found Boyer and placed him in custody.

East Liverpool Police Chief John Lane described Boyer as having blood all over his hands, face, his neck and on his clothing. He also had a minor cut, but didn’t request treatment. Police recovered two knives from the scene with blood on them and took numerous photographs.

The two previous domestic violence cases both involved Petty as the victim. Boyer had been ordered at the time to have no contact with her.
