South Range school board approves positive financial forecast

CANFIELD — The South Range school board this week approved a five-year financial forecast update that shows a positive cash balance through the end.

Submitted by district Treasurer Mario Nero, the forecast shows positive cash balance of just over $4 million in the first one, but drops to $751,605 in the final one. The forecast also predicts the district will enter a deficit spending in the second year at just under $211,000 and growing to nearly $1.5 million in the final one.

In other business, the board approved a 1.95 percent pay increase for personnel not represented by a union, except superintendent Bethany Carlson and Nero. The raise is the same as those in the teachers and classified unions’ contracts.

The board also accepted the resignation of Eileen Hyland as an instructional aide, hired Heidi Guilliams as middle school ESSER tutor and agreed to continue the Raider Before and After Care Program for 2022-2023 with associated costs paid by parents enrolling eligible children

Additionally the board approved a lease agreement for the South Range Soccer Club to use the district’s south fields. The agreement is the same as the one with the Little Raiders program, in which the organization will maintain and stripe the field and cannot install any permanent structures.

Carlson reminded everybody graduation is at 6 p.m. May 28 and the last day for students is June 2.

Carlson also reported the district continues to seek substitutes for instructional aides, teachers and bus drivers. She said the district will help train anyone who wishes to become certified to drive a bus and “all positions are great for stay-at-home parents who wish to only work while their children are in school.”

The June board meeting has been changed to 3:30 p.m. June 29.
