Sheriff’s office announces launch of phone app

LISBON — County residents have another way to contact the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office and share information.

County Sheriff Brian McLaughlin recently announced the launch of a new smart phone app, which can be found to download on both the Google Play and Apple App Store.

Not only can residents and visitors to the county use the app to learn about information released by the sheriff by connecting from there to the social media page, the app itself has ways to garner information. For instance, a tip, including one that can be completely anonymous, can be left using a link on the app. Photos can be added to the tip page.

A calendar of upcoming events is included, special announcements and information on how to contact many of the offices within the sheriff’s office. Instead of calling the dispatcher for non-emergencies, the app has the numbers available for reaching the corrections division, the civil division, the special response team, the narcotics hotline and the drug task force among others.

The app can also help provide information, for instance on how to bid on property and foreclosure sales and links to the county auditor’s website.

For those interesting in obtaining an Ohio Concealed Carry Permit, a section of the app links people to information on the current laws, which are changing in June, and provides information on how to apply or renew a CCW license.

The database of registered sex offenders also is linked to the app, making it more convenient to look up the neighborhood around where someone may be out, with information, name and even a picture provided.

Although not yet ready for use, another link on the app will provide users the ability to obtain an up to date roster of who is currently incarcerated in the Columbiana County Jail. For those wanting to provide an inmate with money for their spending account, the app will allow for that use as well.

McLaughlin said they are excited about the launch of the app, which has been a year in the design phase. The app was created by TheSheriffApp.com, which is a division of OCV, LLC, a company that specializes in helping law enforcement connect to the local community through the use of mobile phone technology.
