Seven Junior Fair youth awarded Jim Baer Memorial Scholarship

The Jim Baer Scholarship was founded in 1999 in memory of Jim Baer through the Mahoning County Market Livestock Committee. Jim Baer donated his time and efforts as the auctioneer of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Livestock Sale at the Canfield Fair for many years. His family continues to do the same to this day.

Money for the scholarship awards are raised by the sale of a beef steer and a market hog at the annual Junior Fair Livestock Sale during the Canfield Fair. The 2021 market steer was raised by the Wonner Family, and purchased by Sarchione Ford-Lincoln of Alliance, Ohio. The 2021 market hog was raised by the Dan Kulifay Family, and purchased by Snyder Antique Auto Parts of New Springfield, Ohio.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship the youth must be a high school senior or a college freshman, have raised and sold an approved market livestock project at the Mahoning County Junior Fair Livestock Sale during the Canfield Fair within one year of applying for the scholarship. Recipients of the 2021 Jim Baer Memorial Scholarship are Taylor Aquisto, North Lima; Ashley James, Beloit; Emily Algaier, Salem; Karlee Bowlin, Beloit; Emily Hemphill, Berlin Center; Reese Snyder, Canfield; Josephine Mellott, Salem.
