NEW WATERFORD – Multiple local fire departments battled freezing temperatures while fighting a blaze at a Hatcher Road business Saturday morning.

New Waterford Fire Department responded to Yarian Brothers Construction Inc., 45681 Hatcher Road, at 7:55 a.m. The inferno caused Ohio State Highway Patrol to close a portion of the roadway as frigid temperatures made fighting the fire challenging.

“We got trucks freezing up. Lines freezing up. We’re always battling the elements when it’s this cold,” New Waterford Fire Chief Greg Van Pelt said.

According to Van Pelt, the building is considered a total loss due to extensive damage.

“There were multiple vehicles, semis, and machinery inside,” he commented. “There is significant amount of loss of trucks and equipment.”

The fire marshal’s office will determine the origin of the fire after an investigation is complete. No injuries were reported.

Multiple fire departments responded including East Palestine, Negley, Columbiana, Lisbon, Leetonia, Beaver Township, Springfield Township, Darlington Township and Green Township.

Van Pelt said he appreciates all the help other departments contributed to extinguish the fire. Local emergency medical crews were on stand by to help firefighters stay warm along with an East Liverpool-based hazmat response team.

According to Van Pelt, the blaze was under control before 11 a.m. while firefighters worked on eliminating any hotspots.

Van Pelt extended appreciation to Horst Sub & Deli out of East Fairfield for providing subs and breakfast sandwiches for first responders and another donation of Dunkin Donuts made from an unknown source.
