Salem tree fire

SALEM — A pine tree caught fire Sunday on Rose Avenue where a witness reported hearing an explosion and said people had been living under the tree for a week and a half.

No injuries were reported and there were no reports of injured suspects at Salem Regional Medical Center.

Firefighters were called to the scene in the middle of a vacant lot in the 100 block of Rose at 8:28 a.m. and remained on the scene for half an hour, extinguishing the fire quickly with no damage to the adjacent vacant structure.

The witness heard the explosion first, then saw the fire and called 911 to report it, saying two people were seen running from the area. A small charcoal grill was found along with a small propane bottle and aerosol can. Clothes, a cell phone, books and paper were also found, all damaged from the fire.
