Salem Township hears about stimulus program

FRANKLIN SQUARE — Salem Township trustees learned recently there’s a federal grant program offering funding to townships for sidewalk, roadway and culvert projects.

Fiscal Officer Dale Davis relayed correspondence he received from the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association (OMEGA) about the township stimulus program through the Ohio Department of Transportation.

According to the email, there’s a limit of $250,000 per project, the project must be: within the township limits, require no to minimal environmental or right-of-way work and be a sidewalk, roadway or culvert (less than 10 feet).

Davis said he would try to get more information for trustees.

In other business, trustees agreed to renew their liability insurance through the Ohio Township Association Risk Management Authority (OTARMA). The cost was quoted at $9,861, which Davis said is down $180 from last year.

“I really expected it to go up a little,” he said. “I was very surprised when I opened it.”

Trustee Chair John Wilms said he’ll get a price to purchase 2,000 tons of grit for the winter. Road Foreman Jason Entrikin also suggested buying a barrel of motor oil, saying he was told there’s going to be a motor oil shortage. Trustees approved the purchase. The price won’t be known until the purchase is made.

During his report, Constable Dan Valentine said he spoke with a representative of ODOT District 11, who said the paving company that worked on state Route 45 is being asked to look at the intersection at Salem Grange Road and state Route 45.

He said there’s no guarantee anything will be done, but they’re at least being asked to take a look. Efforts have been made to make the intersection safer due to the number of accidents there.

The next trustee meeting will be 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at the administration building off of state Route 558.
