Wellsville man gets trial date in murder case

LISBON — Terrance Haywood, accused in the shooting death of Destiny A. Moody in Wellsville in 2019, could face a Common Pleas Court jury in May.

Haywood, 28, Chester Avenue, Wellsville, is charged with murder, two firearm specifications, aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence and having weapons while under a disability. He could face up to life in prison if convicted of the murder charge, which is an unclassified felony.

During a hearing before Judge Scott Washam Friday afternoon, dates were selected for an upcoming trial, as well as two additional times for the attorneys to meet with Washam for status conferences.

The case is being prosecuted by Micah Ault of the Ohio Attorney General’s office, who comes from Cleveland and Haywood is being represented by Dennis W. McNamara from the Columbus area. The next status conference will be held by phone on April 16 with a final status in person on May 6. The case is scheduled for a jury trial on May 17.

Motions discussed at the hearing on Friday included whether as many as 20 people interviewed about the shooting of Moody should all be allowed to be called to testify, as well as the competency of a 4-year-old child to testify in the case.

Haywood, who is also known as Dew, is accused of shooting Moody, a 26-year-old girlfriend, he reportedly had a spat with at the time. Moody, who was also known as Destiny Penny, left behind three sons and a daughter. Three of her children were upstairs at the home at the time of the shooting.

Following that hearing on the charges related to the murder, Haywood also had a brief appearance in front of Common Pleas Court Judge Megan Bickerton. She ruled to deny a motion to suppress the drug evidence in another case in which Haywood is charged with three third-degree felony charges — trafficking in heroin, trafficking in fentanyl-related compound and aggravated trafficking in drugs.

That case is scheduled for a final status conference on June 21, followed by a jury trial on June 29.
