Work to close main Salem street again

SALEM — West State Street between Howard and Ellsworth avenues will be closed again beginning Tuesday as work resumes on the EuroGyro building.

City Service/Safety Director Ken Kenst announced the upcoming closure, saying the parking lots to Auto Zone, Consumers National Bank and Speedway gas station will remain accessible. The detour for trucks traveling east or west on State Street will remain Dodge Drive to Pershing to Southeast and back to State for eastbound traffic and then Southeast to Pershing to Dodge Drive and back to State for westbound traffic.

Kenst estimated the closure at eight weeks, with reopening possibly by Dec. 15 or later.

He was told the repair project is resuming with the same contractor, but with a different engineer and that they’re now replacing the roof.

“I just want it done,” Kenst said.

This will be the third time the road will be closed due to the EuroGyro building issue. The restaurant and building, which also housed two apartments upstairs, has been closed for nearly a year after concerns over the instability of the structure caught the eye of the fire department. The problem was found when firefighters responded to an alarm and found a crack in a wall upstairs which indicated the southern wall was separating from an inner wall.

A project to stabilize the building was done last December so the road could be reopened, then work began in the winter time for permanent repairs, but ended up stopping again. The EuroGyro owner has since changed engineering firms and a new plan had to be submitted to the state.

Fire Chief Scott Mason, who has been monitoring the project, said the best case scenario is reopening the road in four weeks, with the worst-case scenario set at eight weeks, which is what Kenst is going by with hopes the street can open sooner.
