She’s not wicked

Morning Journal/Stephanie Ujhelyi Barb Davis as the Wicked Witch was one of the challenges for participants in Sunday’s East Palestine Community Foundation scavenger hunt.

For several hours on Sunday afternoon, nine teams (maximum four members per team) participated in the inaugural East Palestine Community Foundation Scavenger Hunt, which started at the city park. One of the event’s organizers, Barb Kliner, explained the hunt consisted of challenges, questions and scavenger items, which can earn the team points all within city limits. Examples of individual point opportunities included finding an acorn, a cookie cutter in the shape of a gingerbread man, three examples of personal protective equipment, and a VCR tape of the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation video. The three challenges included photographing a team member in a “downward dog” yoga pose; a team photo with a bird at a specific location, earning points also for each team member in the photo; and finding a witch within the city who has been terrorizing her neighborhood. According to Kliner, the teams are directed to a city street named after a candy bar (answer: Clark Street) and teams are to take a photo with her and get additional points if members get her to tell them her middle name. There were 100 challenges in all. Teams failing to meet the two hour and 15 minute time limit were penalized one point for each minute they were late checking in. The winning team was White Shirts Matter: Sandy Wales, Diane Kelly, Margaret Javens and Terry Works. This event replaced the annual trivia night due to the pandemic; however, Kliner said the trivia night is expected to be brought back year. The EPCF, which was founded in November 2013, funds improvements within the community, such as a new disc golf course that will be installed at city park next summer. “We need your support to continue our work in East Palestine,” she added.
