Leetonia council OKs street funds
LEETONIA — Village Council last week approved funding to pave two streets this fall.
Council approved an emergency resolution approving $232,825 for RT Vernal Paving & Excavating Inc. to pave Somer Street and East High Street between Main Street and village limits plus repair catch basins along the streets.
Mayor Kevin Siembida said the paving is part of the 2020 street paving project and is being approved as an emergency in order to have it completed this fall.
In other business, council tabled discussion on an upgrade to the camera and security system at village hall requested by Police Chief Allen Haueter.
Haueter noted the current system is approximately 20 to 25 years old and is experiencing glitches. He provided an estimate of $12,092 from 21st Century and suggested the cost be covered from all funds that use the building
Fiscal Officer Randy Chismar said he will have a better understanding of appropriations at the beginning of the year. He also noted the entire cost will likely be taken from the General Fund.
Also at the meeting, Village Administrator Gary Phillips reported the area of Columbiana and Hazel streets will be dug up for water line work, with Front Street the following week, in preparation to replace the water line under the railroad tracks that has broken.
Phillips reported earlier this month the water has been rerouted, but the line needs repaired or replaced. He said the current line is estimated to have been installed in the late 1800s or early 1900s and he hopes to run a smaller line through it, which will serve as a casing. If the line cannot be replaced, a new one will have to be dug, which will be significantly more expensive, he said.
Leaf pick up will begin Nov. 2. Leaves must be kept out of the roadway.
