More troubles mean more time for man

LISBON — A 36-year-old East Liverpool man with a criminal history was sentenced to a year in prison for drug-related charges and having a handgun in his vehicle.

Justin Ryan Barrett, Laura Avenue, East Liverpool, had pleaded guilty in June to improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence and aggravated possession of drugs.

Assistant County Prosecutor Ryan Weikart said Barrett had a .25-caliber handgun in his vehicle on March 2, 2019, in a place where it was accessible to anyone in the vehicle. Then on May 27, 2019, Barrett had methamphetamine and a crack pipe, which was broken to try to prevent police from finding it.

These were not Barrett’s first felony convictions, Weikart pointed to a 2015 felony case for burglary and breaking and entering.

Defense attorney Jennifer Gorby said Barrett takes responsibility for what he has done and with credit for time he has already been incarcerated, he is in agreement with the one-year prison sentence Weikart was recommending. Barrett was credited with already serving 235 days in the county jail toward his sentence.

Judge Megan Bickerton called Barrett’s record extensive as it was listed in the presentencing investigation and sentenced Barrett to a year in prison.
