Mineral Ridge makes plans for turf replacement
WEATHERSFIELD — With the Mineral Ridge school district receiving $350,000 in donations and pledges for the planned turf project at the Joe Lane Memorial Stadium, school officials are hoping to have the project completed this year.
Superintendent Damon Dohar said the $720,000 project will replace the grass field in the center of the stadium with artificial turf.
He said because of the coronavirus pandemic, the project may be delayed because of difficulties getting contractors, but the goal is to have it completed by the end of 2020.
“It will depend if we are able to get contractors lined up. We will start it as soon as we possibly can to get this done as soon as we can,” Dohar said.
Officials have said with a turf field they will be able to host more activities.
Dohar said additional fundraising is planned and the public can continue to make donations and gifts for the project on the district website. He said money also is set aside and available in the Joe Lane Stadium project fund.
When the project is completed, a ribbon cutting will be held.
Dohar said project donors will be recognized on a marker or sign to be located near the field.
In another matter at the June 26 meeting, Dohar said plans for next school year will be discussed at the July 15 meeting.
“Surveys have been sent out to the families asking for their input on what worked well and what didn’t when the schools closed in March,” he said.
Residents who did not receive a survey can call 330-652-0287.
He said work that has been done includes a full extensive cleaning of all buildings and replacing lights with LED at both schools to save on energy costs.
