Columbiana will host RITA session

COLUMBIANA– RITA is bringing personnel to Pavilion 1 to hold a tax day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 19 according to Director of Finance Mike Harold, who spoke about the appearance at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The tax day is also open to any other RITA communities in Columbiana County including Leetonia, Washingtonville, New Waterford, East Palestine, Salineville and Wellsville. RITA will aid by doing the local taxes of anyone living in a RITA community. The city contracted with RITA this past summer.

“Come April 15, we used to be swamped in here,” Harold said. “RITA is able to process all of the forms a lot faster than we were able to. So while it may be too early to say, things are progressing quite well.”

Mayor Bryan Blakeman asked if there have been any complaints regarding RITA, and Harold and City Manager Lance Willard said they haven’t heard any major complaints so far. While Councilman Dick McBane said that he has read complaints from other RITA areas about the difficulty getting refunds, council hasn’t seen many yet.

“For anyone that isn’t computer savvy and has concerns about doing it, just show up March 19 and they’ll help you with everything,” Willard said.

In other business, council announced that the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its 67th annual awards banquet at The Links at Firestone Farms at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 29. Karen Vadino, motivational speaker, humorist, trainer and consultant, will be the guest speaker, as the chamber will reward many deserving recipients.

“The chamber recognizes individuals and businesses, who have made a positive difference in our community, exemplified excellence in the field or contributed to the betterment of the Columbiana area,” Mayor Bryan Blakeman said.

Banquet reservations may be made by contacting the chamber at 330-482-3822 or by email to info@columbianachamber.com by Feb. 14, and the cost is $30.

Willard also congratulated R’Pizza Place for receiving an award for coming in first place in the recent Top 10 Northeast Ohio online poll.

The next regularly scheduled council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb.18.
