Lions Care and Share
Members of the Wellsville Lions Club will be on hand this week at the Wellsville Carnegie Public Library to accept applications for the club’s Care and Share program. Care and Share, in its 36th year of helping the residents in the village, provides food baskets and toys to families that can use some extra help during the holiday season. Applications will be available only during the following times at the library: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Wednesday and Friday and 5-7 p.m. Thursday. Applications must be filled out in person and cannot be taken from the library and returned at another time. Applicants must bring a photo identification and proof of address (ex: utility bill). Anyone with a 43968 zip code and/or phone number that begins with 330-532 or 330-362 are eligible to apply. Toys will be available for pick up and food baskets for pick up or delivery (within the village limits only) from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21. Dog licenses on sale today
The county auditor’s office announced the 2020 dog licenses will be on sale Dec. 1 through Jan. 31. The cost is $10 for one year, $30 for a three-year license and $100 for a permanent license. Lifetime licenses are unrefundable should your dog die or be passed on to a new owner. Licenses can be purchased in person at the county auditor’s office or its website, but not before Dec. 1. After Dec. 1, licenses can also be purchased at Fuller’s True Value in East Palestine, Milligan’s True Value in East Liverpool, Pure Pet in Salem and Discount Drug Mart in Lisbon. All kennel licenses must be purchased at the county dog pound.
St. Jude to host Christmas event
The parishes of St. Jude (Columbiana) and Our Lady of Lourdes (East Palestine) will host Christmas on Seventh Street, a festive celebration of the Christmas season, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at St. Jude, 180 Seventh St. The event will include a pancake breakfast, photos with Santa, cookie walk, fresh cut Christmas trees, and more. There will be a live reindeer petting zoo from 1 a.m. to noon and a live Nativity from noon to 2 p.m.
Author to visit Lepper Library
The Lepper Library in Lisbon will host local author Fred Miller at 6 p.m. Thursday. A former staff writer for The Review, Miller wrote a weekly column from 1983 to 2007, and resumed it in April of this year. He will be talking about his book “Worshrag, Shark and Seed,”, collection of 50 columns from the period 1989 to 1993. Call the Lepper Library at 330-424-3117 to register for this event.
The roots of Christmas season
Explore the history of the Christmas season in a program at the Columbiana Library from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. Learn about its modern day roots that are grounded in the mid-19th century with songs, images and traditions. Traci Manning, curator of education for the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, will be the presenter. Registration requested at 482-5509.
Author will speak in Columbiana
Ruth Zarnosky, local author of God: Have I Hit Bottom Yet? will give a talk about her writing and publishing process from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Columbiana Library. She will give a reading from the book and have a question and answer session. A memoir, this book allows readers to see the devastating struggles of a young girl given up for adoption at 4 years of age and her journey through life. Christmas for the Social Concern
The East Palestine Social Concern is preparing for a busy season. Food boxes will be packed Dec. 8 and gifts for 306 children will be bagged Dec. 14. Pickup for those registered will be from 1-3 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Centenary Methodist Church. Christmas expenses are between $8,000 and $10,000. This Thanksgiving, 97 families were assisted at a cost of $3,740. Monetary donations may be sent to Social Concern at 375 E. Grant St., East Palestine, OH 44413.
The Emmanuel Methodist Church of East Palestine will hold its cookie walk sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 A variety of cookies and treats will be available at $4 a dozen.
