Lisbon boosts security at stadium, on buses

LISBON — The school board continues to improve security at district buildings.

The board on Thursday agreed to spend $2,298 to install security cameras at the football stadium, and Superintendent Joseph Siefke reported they will also be installing cameras on all four school buses. The cost of the latter expense is $9,159, but the district received a $3,850 school safety grant from the Ohio Department of Education to help pay for it.

Siefke said they have used some capital improvement funds to pay for more door wraps — a vinyl wrap placed over door windows that allows the people inside the building to see out but not the other way around. They have used similar wraps on windows.

He said these suggestions came out of the latest meeting of the school’s safety committee. The district added a school resource officer in 2018, with the district paying the salary and benefits of the Lisbon police officer during the months school is in session.

Then in January, the district instituted a swipe-card device that all visitors must use to gain access to any of the buildings. The devices are programmed to check whether the person entering the building is a sex offender and can perform non-criminal background checks for such things as protection orders.

“We’re just trying to be safety conscious,” Siefke said.

In other action at the meeting, the board:

— Accepted the retirement of intervention specialist teacher Deborah Glenn, who is done at the end of the year.

“Great teacher,” commented board president Gene Gallo.

“Her 41 years of experience will be missed,” Siefke added.

— Renewed its contract with Sarah Underwood to serve as school trainer for the winter sports season. She will be paid $1,500.

— Hired Rydar Tree Service for $1,500 to remove trees and brush along the east fence line at the football stadium and $750 to remove trees overhanging a nearby home for $750.

— Approved spending $4,540 to purchase an activity chair for a handicapped elementary school student to use. Principal Dan Kemats said the student has outgrown the current chair and the new one will be able to grow with the student as the student progresses through the school system. He said the youth’s activity chair at home is too cumbersome to transport back and forth from school.

— Approved the junior high Honors Builder Club trip to Gettysburg and Washington, D.C., on May 21-23.

Athletic Director Kyle Bing reported there will likely be no girls junior varsity basketball team this year because only 10 girls have gone out for the varsity team. He said they are seeing the affect of the small girls eighth grade class from last year as they moved on to become freshman. That resulted in no girls eighth grade team last season.
