Fair planning to warm more hearts

LISBON — A new special category is planned for the 2020 Columbiana County Fair.

According to fair board director Sharen Cope, “Blankets for Babies” will function similarly to the Veterans category in that exhibitors will be asked to make and enter a special blanket for a baby who is treated or born at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Cope will be working closely with Dr. Elena Rossi, director of the hospital, in donating all entries after the fair closes next year.

Cope is patterning the category after one that was a part of the Geauga County Fair this past August where their entries were donated to Rainbow Children’s Hospital and they received close to 100 blankets.

As with our Veterans category, exhibitors may make quilts, afghans, or no sew blankets, or receiving blankets that will then be presented to Dr. Rossi and her staff at a ceremony after the fair is over on Aug. 9.

According to Cope, “2020 marks the 175th anniversary of the fair and I believe this is a wonderful way to mark this very special anniversary and to help those families that are dealing with premature births or babies that are in need of medical treatment by providing them with a blanket made especially for their child.”
