Leetonia approves school resource officer

LEETONIA–Village Council Wednesday night approved a contract to provide a school resource officer to Leetonia schools.

Council approved the police department to provide an officer to the school district for the 2019-2020 school year at a wage of $16.25 per hour up to 40 hours and $24.36 per hour for overtime. Chief Allen Haueter said the cost remains the same as previous years.

Officer Alan Shaffer will serve as the school resource officer this year.

In other business, council approved the first readings of ordinances updating the building and housing code and amending the personnel policy to prohibit all use of tobacco products on village property.

Also at the meeting council granted permission to Haueter to keep an armored vest at a cost of $756 that will not be reimbursed through a state grant. He said there was an error in the order form submitted for the grant, which provided reimbursement for just eight vests. There are nine officers on the police roster.

Council also granted Haueter permission to purchase four new tires for a cruiser at a cost of $583.36 from Tom’s Tires in East Palestine.

Additionally council acknowledged the resignation of Robert Rudibaugh from the fire department and hired Christian Gamble to the department.

Council also approved councilman Bill Garlough as an EMT. Garlough can serve on the department in addition to village council, but is required to abstain from all action regarding the department and cannot collect pay from the department.

Council also passed a resolution of support for the EMS department to conduct a T-shirt fundraiser to benefit the department and someone from the community.

The next regular council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at village hall.
