Meeting time adjusted by Leetonia council

LEETONIA–Village Council has changed its meeting time beginning in August.

Council on Wednesday agreed to begin meeting at 6:30 p.m. with committee meetings to follow. Meetings will remain the first and third Wednesday of each month in council chambers at village hall.

Council agreed to change the meeting time at the suggestion of Mayor Kevin Siembida, who explained that council meetings are typically just for business actions while the committee meetings are where items are discussed in depth. He said the committee meetings, which were held prior to council meetings, were being cut short to conduct the council meetings at the regularly scheduled time.

By starting early with the council meeting, council members will be able to thoroughly discuss topics during the committee meetings instead of rushing to a conclusion, Siembida said.

Siembida had originally suggested starting the council meetings at 6 p.m., but changed it in consideration of some council members’ work schedules.

In other business, council approved the tax budget for 2020 presented by Fiscal Officer Randy Chismar.

According to Chismar, the village is in good financial shape. He said the tax budget did not include specials projects, so there is room for those throughout the year.

Chismar said the only funds that concern him are EMS and the labs, which are customer based. He said the funds are not in a deficit, but will be close to it by the end of the projected 2020 budget.

Also at the meeting, Village Administrator Gary Phillips said the street department is currently conducting a brush pickup as a courtesy to residents, but that it will stop on July 26 until the regularly scheduled fall dates.

Police Chief Allen Haueter reported the Washingtonville VFW and Leetonia American Legion will each donate $300 for the department to replace a Taser.

Siembida reported the Shade Tree tree inventory is under way and an annual report will be provided to council at the end of each year.

The next regular council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at village hall.
