Familiar names top barbecue competition

EAST LIVERPOOL — While the day was dampened a bit by some rain storms, there was still plenty of hot barbecue and cool music to be had, according to East Liverpool Community Partnership for Revitalization (ELCPR) smokeswoman Kathy Hyatt Smith.

Some familiar names topped the BBQ competition when all was said and done during Saturday’s third annual Ceramic City Jazz, Blues and BBQ Festival.

Uncle Toad’s BBQ of Dayton was named Grand Champion, and Smokin’ Foolz of New Cumberland reserve champion with Extra Mile BBQ of Loveland, Spittin’ Feathers of Youngstown and Convicted Pigs of Parkersburg wrapping up the final five.

Extra Mile and Spittin’ Feathers are the only ones who weren’t past winners.

Did a decision to vend their products on Friday make a difference, as none of the final five chose to do that?

Twelve judges for the Kansas City BBQ Society made the trip to decide upon the entrants and had that wrapped up by 2 p.m. However, the contenders and the audience didn’t learn the winners until 4 p.m. when announcements were made.

Each team submitted one entry in each of the four categories (chicken, pork ribs, pork butt and beef brisket).
