Peebles becoming Gordmans

Photo by Mary Ann Greier Peebles in the Salem Plaza has begun a store closing sale, with plans to close this summer, then reopen the location as a Gordmans in late June.

SALEM — Peebles in Salem is closing this summer, but shoppers fear not: a Gordmans store will open in the same spot in late June.

A sign recently posted on the wall outside the entrance advertises a store closing sale, with some discounts inside the store as high as 40 percent on select merchandise. Small yard signs at the entrance to the Salem Plaza on East State Street where the store is located are also advertising that the store is closing.

“Stage Stores is converting the Salem Peebles location to a Gordmans store this summer. Peebles and Gordmans are part of Stage Stores,” according to Stage Stores spokesperson Jenny Clifton, adding that “Stage Stores is opening 38 Gordmans stores across the country this March, and opening an additional 36 stores this summer, and Salem is one of the summer location openings.”

Gordmans is considered an off-price retail store. Stage Stores also operates Bealls, Goody’s, Palais Royal, and Stage specialty department stores.

“Stage Stores’ Gordmans retail chain is growing in response to consumers enjoying its off-price offerings, which means bigger deals and smaller prices on a wide array of apparel and home decor items. Gordmans, which has been delighting shoppers for more than 100 years, has fresh new merchandise deliveries arriving weekly; there will always be something new to discover when it comes to popular name brand apparel, home decor, footwear, gifts, accessories, fragrances and more for the whole family. To learn more about Gordmans, visit gordmans.com,” Clifton said in an email.

The new Gordmans store is set to open in late June, with Peebles closing in the days leading up to the Gordmans grand opening sometime in June.

She noted that “all current associates will be offered jobs at Gordmans.”

The Gordmans vision statement, according to the Stage Stores website, is “Thrill every guest with fun finds and exciting deals.”

More information about the Salem location will become available as plans progress, a Stage Stores spokesman said.
