Leetonia school board approves tax abatement

LEETONIA — The Leetonia school board Tuesday night approved a tax abatement to another local business that is expanding.

The board approved a 15-year tax abatement for Haltec Corporation and Watershed Realty Holdings LLC as a part of an enterprise zone agreement after the company announced a $9 million 55,000 square foot business expansion at the World Trade Park off state Route 344. The abatement waives 75 percent of the tax, with the company paying the remaining 25 percent directly to the school district.

The board in October approved a similar abatement for Pennex Aluminum, which is also located in the industrial park.

In other business, the board approved a change in schools Superintendent Rob Mehno’s contract, eliminating payment into his 403b retirement to instead pick up his contribution to State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) Ohio.

The board also approved a one-year lease extension to the Bears to Bee Preschool at a rate of $1,700; approved a memorandum of understanding with Youngstown State University’s College Credit Plus Dual Enrollment Program; and accepted donations of $1,000 from Marie Evans Miller Agency Inc. to the Down on Main Scholarship Fund, $90 from Diane Perkins to the Perkins-Tortora Scholarship Fund and $50 from the Leetonia Masonic Lodge to the art class.
