Submitted photo Larry Wirtz, president and instructor of the Chavez Studio of Magic, will be featuring a free evening of inspiration, laughter and sleight-of-hand magic at the New Waterford United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. March 23. A light reception and meet and greet will follow the program. Wirtz will share the stage with fellow sleight-of-hand artist and 1948 Chavez Studio of Magic graduate Niland Herbkersman of Columbiana and his daughter June Herbkersman McLaughlin, who is skilled in the art of ventriloquism. The show is open to all ages.

Career fairs set at Beaver, Salem

Students in grades 7-12 throughout the county are invited to attend two separate career fairs sponsored by the county Educational Service Center, Sustainable Opportunity Development Center and Beaver Local and Salem high school. The first fair will be 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 21 at the Beaver Local; the second from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 10 at the Salem High. Businesses are invited to set up a table at either or both events to share local career opportunities. A $20 donation per table is suggested to defray dinner cost at the Salem event only. Centerplex to host train show

The 27th Midwest Scale Train Show will be held March 22-23 at the Salem Centerplex. All scales and gauges are welcome, from N scale to 7/8 scale. The event will feature manufacturers, clinics, operating layouts and modules, and a model contest. Top area and regional manufactures and vendors will also be there. The show is open from 1-7 p.m. March 22 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 23. For further information go to the Salem Community Center website or Facebook page.

Irish tenor to perform in area

Irish tenor Emmet Cahill will make a return appearance to St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5. Cahill is one of the lead singers of Celtic Thunder and he last played at St. Columba for a Christmas show in December 2017. He will perform a combination of Irish music and church hymns. Tickets are $35 to $55 and can be purchased at www.emmetcahill.com or by calling the church rectory at 330-744-5233. The $55 price includes a meet-and-greet with the singer and there is a limited number of tickets. St. Columba is located at 159 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown. There is ample free parking with security and the church is handicap-accessible.

Free cone day to benefit ACH

On Wednesday, March 20, Dairy Queen locations throughout the Mahoning Valley will offer guests a free small cone to celebrate the first day of spring, along with raising awareness and funds for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. In 2018, local DQ locations raised more than $25,000 through their year-round fundraising for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Free swimming class offered

To celebrate April as Adult Learn to Swim Month, the Salem Community Center will offer a free class for beginners called Swim Salem 101. Class will take place every Thursday in April from 11 to 11:45 a.m.. The class will be instructed by Barb Clary, USMS Ohio Masters Swim Team member and USMS adult learn-to-swim certified instructor. Super Kids event beckons racers

Quakertown Super Kids is accepting registration for racers until April 19. Super Kids is a soap box derby race for challenged children between 7 and 18. The race requires commitment to two days, practice day at the Washingtonville VFW on May 11 and race day in Salem on June 1. The race is completely free for racers, everything including the soap box derby cars are provided. A look at the indoor desert

“Desert Adaptations: Live from the World’s Largest Indoor Desert,” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. March 28, at the Salem Library. For this presentation, provided by Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, we will look inside the geodesic dome which houses the indoor desert and we will search for cactus, birds, mammals, and reptiles that survive in this location that simulates a desert. A zookeeper and live animal ambassador will be the educators. Registration is required at 332-0042.

Church to host vendor show

St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 Hill Blvd., East Liverpool, will host a vendor show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6. Admission is free. There also will be free samples and raffles. For more information, call 330-207-5545 or 383-7575.

Eagles to serve up the feast

The Lisbon Banquet will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 25 at the New Lisbon Presbyterian Church. Lisbon Eagles 2216 Aerie and its auxiliary are sponsoring the event. The meal is free and open to the public.
