Judge indicted, allegedly stole $100,000 from client

YOUNGSTOWN — Suspended Mahoning County Judge Diane Vettori-Caraballo has been indicted in federal court, accused of stealing at least $100,000 from a former client, according to the Journal’s news partner, WKBN.

Vettori-Caraballo, 50, faces one count each of mail fraud, structuring cash deposits, making false statements to law enforcement and filing a false tax return.

According to the WKBN report, investigators said she stole between $100,200 and $328,000 in cash from the home of a client after they died in March of 2016.

The report stated that according to the indictment she had provided planning services for Robert Sampson, including drafting his will, but that he died without a will.

WKBN reported the indictment also stated that Sampson’s closest living relative was his sister, Dolores Falgiani, and that Vettori-Caraballo had also helped her with her will. Falgiani requested in the will that money be given to friends, relatives and the Angels for Animals charity.

Falgiani had mentioned she had shoeboxes of cash stored at home. She was found dead in her home a few months later in March of 2016. Vettori-Caraballo found the shoeboxes that contained $20,000 in May, the report said.

The indictment also said that the judge found new money on two other occasions in 2016 and 2017. It was also reported that she made 22 deposits into five different banks within four weeks and lied to the FBI when confronted about it.

Vettori-Caraballo was elected judge of the Mahoning County Court no. 3, Sebring Court, in 2002 and had jurisdiction over criminal and traffic charges in Sebring, Beloit, Berlin Township and Green, Goshen, Ellsworth, Smith and Washington townships. She was re-elected in 2006 and 2012.

She had also served as an acting judge in East Liverpool Municipal Court in the past.

Vettori-Caraballo’s husband, Ismael Caraballo, 60, is also charged with one count of filing a false tax return.
