Truck driver killed in Route 14 accident
NORTH BENTON — A Niles man is dead after his tanker truck was struck by another vehicle on Beloit Snodes Road in Smith Township Sunday night, according to reports from the Journal’s news partner, WKBN First News.
The highway patrol is investigating the crash that occured around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of state Route 14 and Beloit Snodes Road in Mahoning County.
The highway patrol told WKBN that the driver of a pickup truck pulling a trailer with a boat was traveling south on Beloit Snodes Road when he ran a stop sign at state Route 14 and hit the tanker truck driven by Brandon Fuller, 37, of Niles.
Fuller was pronounced dead at the scene and the patrol will be turning over their evidence to the county prosecutor’s office to determine what charges, if any, will be filed.
According to the WKBN report, the driver and passenger in the pickup were not injured. They were not identified in the report.
Troopers told WKBN that the driver of the pickup said his brakes failed and he wasn’t able to stop before rolling into the path of the tanker truck, which was westbound.
The crash resulted in the closure of Route 14 for nearly 12 hours, with cleanup efforts involving hazmat crews and workers with the Ohio Department of Transportation since the tanker truck was carrying brine. Crews also cleaned up a diesel leak that was the result of the crash.
