Salineville wonders about fate of bank building

SALINEVILLE — With the announcement last week of the closure of Huntington Bank’s branch in Salineville, Councilman Jim Wilson at Monday’s meeting asked about the future of the site, which is located right next to village hall.

Wilson questioned if anyone from the village had gone over to talk with them and if there was any chance Huntington was going to sell the building to another bank. It was noted by Councilman Buck Higgins it may just sit there empty instead of being sold to a competitor.

Huntington Bank sits on the location once served by Sky Bank and prior to that the Citizens Banking Co., which was founded in 1902 in Salineville.

Council also discussed Wilson’s concerns about large trucks making deliveries for American Electric Power up Maple Hill.

Police Chief Matthew Devlin said he and Mayor Linda Adams spoke to those involved with the project about safety concerns regarding the large trucks going up the hill. After that, Devlin said it appeared the company brought in smaller trucks and provided some vehicles to escort the trucks up the hill, which has some blind curves.

In other matters, Devlin, who also serves as streets commissioner, stated the work continues on adding catch basins and drainage from Commerce Street to Foundry Hill and Madison Avenue. Some of the work has been done, but the weather has slowed progress.

Adams said the village appreciates the cooperation of those living in the areas where the work is being done. Once the catch basins and drainage work is completed, there will be some blacktop repairs done in the same areas.

Council will be accepting applications from anyone in the village wanting to serve on the Board of Public Affairs. Current BPA member Gary Bowling has indicated his intentions to resign from the position on Oct. 31, although Adams said she does not have his resignation letter yet.

Halloween trick-or-treat in the village will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31 with the parade at 5 p.m. and trick-or-treat to follow until 7 p.m.

The next meeting of council will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 with a personnel and policies committee meeting preceding it that evening at 5.
