Bible read marathon set today

SEBRING — Sebring Evangelical Friends Church members plan to launch a 24-hour reading marathon at 7 p.m. today on a city street corner, Bibles in hand.

Old Testament, Gospels, New Testament –whatever the Book, they believe the Bible is a good read, church member Brian Pinkerton said.

As the elder in charge of outreach, he thought the Bible-reading session at the corner of 15th and Ohio at Harvest Park could be a good way to let the community members know that the church is there for them.

“This is just a way for us to share our faith,” he said.

The reading marathon will be broken up into 15-minute segments, with people taking turns reading aloud. About 20 people have signed up so far, but Pinkerton said anybody is welcome to come and read if they want. They just have to show up at the park sometime during the 24-hour period, which ends at 7 p.m. Saturday.

If they’re nervous about reading in front of people, they can arrive at 3 in the morning. They just need to show up, he said.

All the members of the church have been invited to come out, with people of all ages expected and many families participating. There won’t be loudspeakers or shouting, just people quietly reading the words of the Bible for the multitude to hear.

“We look at it as a way to share our beliefs,” Pinkerton said.

The church is located at 615 S. Johnson Road, not far from the downtown park where they’ll gather.

Pinkerton’s wife, Becky, volunteered to supply lots of coffee and tea to keep them going and he said she’s offered to read, too, if she’s needed.

He said the church has a small congregation, but the youth group is growing and they’ve gone on mission trips to larger cities.
