St. Jude festival is this week

St. Jude Parish Festival, 180 Seventh St., will be held Thursday through Sunday. Hours are 5-10 p.m. nightly. There will be entertainment, food, beer and wine, bingo, raffles, rides, games, a petting zoo and pony rides. There also will be a $5,000 drawing on Sunday night.

Go wild at the covered bridge

Salem Library and the Salem Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a “Go Wild in the Park” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Teegarden covered bridge. Jason Reynolds and Joshua Emanuelson, from the Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District, will present a program on what kinds of strange and interesting creatures and plants live on the bottom of our local streams. The program is free and family oriented. Registration is requested by calling Shane at 332-5512 or online at www.salem.lib.oh.us.

Workshop to cover opioid crisis

The staff of U.S. Sen. Rob Portman will hold a grant funding workshop from 2-3 p.m. June 27 at the county Government Services Building, 7989 Dickey Drive, Suite 2, Lisbon. The workshop is for the counties of Columbiana, Jefferson and Harrison to help fight the opioid epidemic. Constituents will have the opportunity to share thoughts and concerns about the impact of the opioid epidemic with a district representative who will provide their feedback to the senator. Staff will also provide an overview of Portman’s legislative efforts to address the problem and help local communities secure additional resources to tackle the heroin and prescription drug epidemic. Route 62 paving work slated

A resurfacing project will begin June 26 in Columbiana County to extend the pavement life on nearly five miles of U.S. Route 62 from the Stark County line to state Route 165. Traffic will be maintained with flaggers. ODOT’s contractor for this $883,000 project is Central-Allied Enterprises Inc., from Canton with a completion date of Oct. 31.

Work scheduled on Route 7

Work is expected to begin June 26 to resurface state Route 7 at East Liverpool. The work will begin just inside the city’s south corporation limit and extend to the Route 7 and state Route 39 ramp. Traffic will be maintained with flaggers. ODOT’s contractor for this $520,000 project is Shelly and Sands Inc., from Columbus, with a completion date of mid-August.

Wildlife Center seeks volunteers

The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center will offer volunteer training sessions from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 26, July 24 and Aug. 28. The sessions are for those who would like to become a volunteer and for current volunteers who want to learn more about the displays. Attendance is not required to become a volunteer at the center and participants may attend any or all of the evenings. For more information about the center email beavercreekw@aol.com.

Apple Blossoms, Buds sought

The deadline for applications for the Little Miss Apple Blossom/Little Mr. Apple Bud contest — part of the 50th Johnny Appleseed Festival — has been extended until June 30 for children who will be between the ages of 4 and 9 by Sept. 15 and live within Columbiana County. Two wildlife programs offered

The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center will offer a program on macroinvertebrates — flatworms, crayfish, snails, clams and insects such as dragonflies — with Josh Emanuelson, Columbiana County Soil and Water Conservation District, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Participants will meet in the parking lot by the iron bridge and must wear shoes or boots to get in the creek. From 1-5 p.m. Sunday, local beekeeper George Stacy will be at the center to talk about honey bees and answer questions about the live honey bee display.
