Sevek powers victorious Blue squad
LISBON–Southern’s Anna Sevek didn’t waste the chance to showcase her game in front of some of Columbiana County’s best players.
The Southern senior was a presence inside, outside and on the boards as she finished with 13 points and six rebounds to help lift the Blue Team to a 51-46 victory over the Red Team in the 33rd annual Columbiana County Classic Tuesday at Nace Gymnasium.
Sevek snagged MVP honors for the Blue Team. She knocked down a pair of threes and also made a crucial layup with 3:14 left to help thwart a Red comeback.
“It was so much fun playing out there with those girls,” Sevek said. “We had a lot of laughs, it was a good time.”
Salem’s Allee Davidson-Chuck took home the MVP for the Red Team. She scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
“It was a different group of girls than I’m used to, but I had a lot of fun,” Davidson-Chuck said. “I knew of some of the girls, but I really didn’t know all of them personally. It was a nice experience.”
The Blue team established a double-digit lead midway through the first half thanks in large part to the scoring and rebounding efforts of Columbiana’s Marisa McDonough, who finished with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Blue lead got as large as 40-27 after a McDonough putback with 14:38 left in the second half.
After that, the Red Team began chipping away thanks to a nice drive and a three-pointer by Davidson-Chuck. A step-back three by Beaver Local’s Kierra Taylor narrowed the gap to 41-39 before a mid-range jumper by fellow Beaver Tanner Yergin tied it at 41 with 6:48 left.
Taylor complemented Davidson-Chuck’s effort on the Red Team with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Blue Team took control from there. After a free throw and a close-range basket by Columbiana’s Alexis Cross gave the Blue a three-point lead, Leetonia’s Kayla Jackson went hard after a loose ball and passed ahead to an open Sevek for a layup and a 46-41 lead.
Jackson gave the Blue enough breathing room down the stretch with a three-pointer with just over a minute to go to make it 51-43. She finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
“I thought we all did a nice job sharing the ball with each other,” Sevek said. “We also got up and down the floor pretty well and played with a lot of effort.”

¯Cross, who finished with five points and four rebounds, was fresh off a fun weekend in Colorado Springs where she represented Northeast Ohio at the USA Basketball 3-on-3 U18 National Championships.
“It was really cool, there were players there that were going to UConn and Stanford,” Cross said. “It was interesting to see how my game compared with some of the best girls in America. I’m tiny compared to a lot of the other girls there, but I did my best. I don’t think I played bad.”
¯Cross said she was still feeling the effects of the long weekend.
“It was a lot of running,” Cross said. “There was a 12-second shot clock, so you didn’t get a lot of time to rest. We didn’t get home until about one in the morning on Monday, so I’m still a little tired.”
¯Sevek and Cross know each other well off the court and were eager to play with each other for the first time Tuesday.
“I love Anna, she’s a lot of fun,” Cross said. “It’s kinda sad we never got to play AAU together.”
“I was really looking forward to playing with Alexis tonight, we’re friends off the court” Sevek said. “She’s a great ballhandler and a good team-player.”
