Henderson, Hasson win titles

BOARDMAN -The Beavers ended the regular season on a positive note.

The Beaver Local wrestling team competed Friday and Saturday at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling Tournament up at Boardman High School.

In the end, two wrestler brought titles back home to Columbiana County with them, while the Beavers ended up placing in the top five as a team.

Individually for Beaver Local, Josh Henderson pinned Howland’s Nico Lucarelli in 1:21 to win the title in the 113-pound weight class. Also finishing first for the Beavers was Daniel Hasson (138). Hasson claimed the championship by defeating West Branch’s Braycen Shelton by a score of 8-7.

Team-wise, Beaver Local finished fifth with 136.5 points.

West Branch finished first at the tournament with 236 points. The Warriors were followed in the standings by Canfield (204), Howland (170) and Austintown-Fitch (140).

“We would have liked to have finished higher in the tournament,” Beaver Local head coach Jordan Williams said. “We came in with a couple guys banged up and it hurt us.

“There is always such good competition at this tournament and its always nice to test our kids before we go into our post season.”

All told, six wrestlers ended up placing for the Beavers.

Also placing for the Beavers was Jack Dawson (106), Jason Keyes (120), Ron Foster (132) and Cody Green (220). Keyes placed third, Dawson and Foster finished fourth and Green ended up sixth.

In their final match, Keyes defeated Alliance’s Mychael Jefferson by decision by a score of 6-5, Dante Ginnetti Poland’s pinned Dawson in 4:26, Boardman’s Mario Graziani defeated Foster by decision by a score of 3-2 and Jackson-Milton’s Jon Conlon pinned Green in 1:35.

Beaver Local is scheduled to return to action Feb. 15-16 at the Ohio Division II Eastern District Sectional Tournament down at Buckeye Local High School. The top finishers in each weight class will advance to the district tournament at Heath High School

“Our kids have pushed themselves all season,” Williams said. “We have expected a lot from them and they have responded well to it. They understand the importance of this part of the season, and always expect to do well. We have a lot of work to do to still meet our goals and our kids are looking forward to getting the opportunity to see where they stand in the state.”
