Boys sectional draws announced

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Potters will get a shot at redemption in their tournament opener.

East Liverpool will open up the postseason with a third matchup against Steubenville in the Division II sectional basketball tournament at Ohio University Belmont in St. Clairsville.

The Potters (6-13) will take on Big Red on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.

East Liverpool was given the No 9 seed in the section. St. Clairsville, who knocked East Liverpool out of postseason play last year, was given the No. 1 seed, followed by Carrollton (13-7), Indian Creek (14-5) and Steubenville (14-5). Beaver Local (11-9) is the No. 6 seed and will open against No. 5 Harrison Central (14-5) on Feb. 22 at 8 p.m.

East Liverpool lost at Steubenville, 61-43, and also dropped a 56-39 decision against Big Red at Potter Fieldhouse this season.

The Potters have also faced three other teams in the sectional draw. East Liverpool was defeated by Carrollton, 75-64, in their third game of the season and the Potters defeated Minerva, 56-47.

East Liverpool has also faced off with rival Beaver Local twice this season. The Potters swept the season series, 62-51 at East Liverpool and 54-51 at Beaver Local.

If East Liverpool wins its opener against Steubenville, it will play Minerva on Feb. 27 at 8 p.m.

If Beaver Local gets past Harrison Central, it will play Indian Creek Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.

Division IV – Struthers

STRUTHERS -The Tigers have reaped the benefit of a regular season that has them in contention for an Inter Tri-County League lower tier title.

Wellsville (15-3) received the No. 1 seed on Sunday for the Division IV sectional tournament at Struthers High School. The Tigers are followed in the seeding order by Mogadore (14-3), Lowellville (12-6) and Southern Local (14-6).

Wellsville will open the postseason on March 2 at 6 p.m. against the winner of Heartland Christian-Western Reserve.

Southern Local will begin tournament play one day earlier on March 1 at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of Youngstown Christian-East Canton.

The Tigers and Indians were positioned on different ends of the bracket and would not meet before the district finals. Wellsville and Southern Local split their regular season series this year. The Tigers defeated the Indians, 54-48, at Wellsville. The Indians defeated Tigers, 44-37, at Salineville.

Division III – Salem

SALEM – Defending champion Springfield picked up the top seed on Sunday at the Salem Div. III sectional-district draw at Salem High School.

The Tigers, winners of the Inter-Tri County League upper tier, will open against the winner of South Range-Waterloo at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 at Salem High School.

Akron Manchester got the second seed, St. Thomas Aquinas third and Crestview fourth.

The tournament opens on Feb. 25.
