Late rally powers Springfield into district final

From Staff Reports

STRUTHERS–The Springfield baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally past McDonald 6-5 in a Div. IV district semifinal Tuesday at Cene Park.

The top-seeded Tigers advance to take on second-seeded Warren JFK in a district final at 5 p.m. Thursday at Cene Park.

The Tigers entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 5-3, but a leadoff triple by Jarrett Orbin and walks to Nick Slike and Brannon Brungard loaded the bases with nobody out. John Slike tied the game with a double before Mitch Seymour was intentionally walked.

Chris Thompson then stepped up and laid down a bunt, driving home Brungard and giving the Tigers the victory.

McDonald scored all five of its runs in the top of the seventh to surge in front. Springfield took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the second.
