Leetonia edges Heartland

LEETONIA — The Leetonia boys basketball team closed out its regular season with a 55-54 win over Heartland on Friday.

Leetonia finishes 3-19.

Brock Simpson paced the Bears with 17 points, while Ethan Hartman had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Senior Roman Ferry, who had been injured all season, started for the winners.

Ronald Matthews led Heartland with 17 points.

Leetonia is at Southern for the start of the Div. IV sectional tournament on Feb. 26.

Leetonia won the jayvee portion, 52-43. Pat Hull had 26 points for Leetonia. Nate Garzanich and Hayden Stewart had 14 points each for the Lions.

Springfield 63, Columbiana 49

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Drew Clark had 20 points and Shane Eynon added 17 more as Springfield downed Columbiana 63-49 on Friday.

Erik Hopfenziz had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Clippers. Matt Mazei added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Columbiana fell to 11-8.

WELLSVILLE — Junior Justin Wright scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Wellsville edged Shadyside, 66-64-, in an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference consolation game Friday.

Wellsville(12-9) trailed 34-30 at halftime before taking a 50-47 lead after three quarters.

Luke Green added 15 points, Garrett Scott 11 points and Derrick Suggs 10 points and seven assists.

For Shadyside, Kelly Hendershot had 26 points, Rice Amos 15 and Collin Holmes 13.

There was no junior varsity game.

Wellsville will close out the regular season next Friday at Crestview.

Waterloo 54, Western Reserve 45

BERLIN CENTER — Waterloo handled Western Reserve during Friday’s 54-45 Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference win Friday.

The Vikings got 19 points from Vaughn Dorsey and 16 points from Caleb Francis.

Waterloo outscored Western Reserve in every quarter.

Western Reserve moves to 4-16 overall and 3-11 in the MVAC.

For the Blue Devils, Riley Miller had 20 points and Todd Henning 11 points.

Waterloo also won the junior varsity game, 40-36. Luke Simons led Waterloo with 18. Gabe Platt had 25 points for Western Reserve.

Western Reserve will play at Rootstown on Tuesday.

HANNIBAL — Southern Local fell to River 57-51 on Friday night in an OVAC consolation pool contest.
