Bears, Warriors advance

LEETONIA — Leetonia scored the final five points to pull out a 29-23 win over Southern Local in a Division IV girls sectional tournament opener Thursday night.

Anna Buffone led the Bears with 15 points. She scored eight, including a pair of three-pointers, during a 14-9 third-quarter run that gave the Bears a 24-21 lead.

The Indians closed the gap to 24-23 in the fourth quarter before the Bears closed out the scoring as Ari Russell and Samantha Schneider made baskets and Taran Ferry added a free throw.

Russell contributed six points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Leetonia advances to play at second-seeded and state-ranked Western Reserve at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Riley Felton led the Indians with a game-high 16 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and five steals. Sam Michael contributed five assists and four rebounds, Kaya McCulleoy five rebounds and Hannah Hayes our assists.

The Indians finish at 5-18 on the season.

West Branch 49, Howland 44

BELOIT — The West Branch girls basketball team staged a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Howland 49-44 in a Div. II sectional final Thursday at West Branch High School.

The fourth-seeded Warriors (17-6) advance to take on top-seeded Poland in a Div. II district semifinal at 6 p.m. Monday at Austintown Fitch High School.

Fifth-seeded Howland finishes its season 17-7.

Peyton Alazaus paced the Warriors with 13 points. Carly Scarpitti came through with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Grace Heath added 10 points.

West Branch trailed 21-20 at halftime and 37-33 after the third quarter before outscoring Howland 16-7 in the final frame.

John Marshall 57

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va.–The Oak Glen boys basketball team closed its regular season strong with a 71-57 win over John Marshall Thursday.

The Golden Bears are now 16-5, which is the second most wins in school history,

Ethan Travis had another big night in the post with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Wyatt Wiley and Sean Smith each added 14 points, with Smith dishing out three assists.

Jarrett Gittings finished with 11 points.

The Golden Bears won the jv game 43-39. Kaleb Dailey led the way with 15 points.

Oak Glen is back in action Tuesday when the Golden Bears host North Marion in a sectional opener at 7 p.m.
