Givens just misses out on Blue-Grey victory

DALLAS — Beaver Local’s Garrett Givens came close to playing on a winner in the annual Blue-Grey All-American Bowl on Monday at AT&T stadium.

Givens, a 6-foot-2, 225-pounder, was an inside linebacker on the East team which came up on the losing end of a 40-34 scoreline.

Cooper Legas’ 9-yard touchdown run with less than a minute left in the game erased a 20-point deficit to give the West the win.

Givens, who wore No. 32, was selected as one of the top 90 senior high school football players out of 6,750 who competed at the Blue-Grey All-American combines.

The Beaver Local standout was nominated for the three-day event, by former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Byron Evans.

The West opened the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run with five minutes left in the first quarter. The East’s Jesse Deglow tied the game on a 2-yard run with nine minutes left in the second quarter.

Darntrell Council’s 95-yard punt return put the East up 14-7 with four minutes left in the second quarter, but Juwaun Price tied the game back up with a 99-yard kick return.

Council expanded the East’s lead to 24-14 ith a 22-yard run to start the fourth quarter. DuRon King grew the East lead to 34-14 with a 5-yard run.

Cooper Legas threw a pair of touchdowns late in the game to rally the West and Kameron Ransom pulled the West to within one at 34-33 with a 22-yard touchdown with two minutes left.

Givens has been a four-year starter for the Beavers and three-year captain for the Beavers. He collected more than 350 career tackles, including 101 this season along with 806 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns.
