CALCUTTA — Beaver Local wrestlers captured four individual weight class championships on the way to a runaway team win on Saturday at the 41st annual Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Beaver Local High School.

Beaver Local freshman Mark Emmerling (120 pounds), junior Cole McComas (132), sophomore Logan Krulik (152) and senior Beau Smith (170) all took care of business in their respective weight classes in highlighting the team’s dominance. McComas’ Hoppel title was his third.

“This was a tough tournament with some excellent competition,” Beaver Local coach Jordan Williams said. “Winning this Tournament is important to this community. Each kid did their part to help this team win, This team is special, I’m proud of them.”

Second-place finishers for the Beavers included Jaymin Salsberry (106), Skyler Lasure (145), Brenden Severs (160) and Daniel Wirth (285).

“The Hoppel Tournament is special to this community,” Williams said. “Our kids look forward to this event. We had so many people help make this event great. This tournament is a testament to this wrestling community and the support they show for this program and that has always started with the Hoppel family. We are blessed to have so many people involved with this program that understand what it takes to be exceptional.”

Oak Glen wrestlers Shawn Moore (113) and Peyton Hall (138) also had days to remember at the tournament.

Hall, a junior who has verbally committed to West Virginia University, earned his 100th career win with an 11-1 major decision over Beaver Local’s Devon Salsberry in the championship semifinal.

Hall later closed out the weight class by beating Austintown Fitch’s Gus Sutton 3-1 in the championship final. Sutton finished eighth at 126 last year in the Ohio Div. I state tournament.

Hall was 88-8 through his first two high school seasons including 45-5 as a sophomore.

Moore, a senior, also earned his 100th win by topping Alliance’s Alex Bailey 13-6 in the championship semifinal at 113 pounds. Moore finished second in the weight class, losing to Austintown Fitch’s Colin Roberts 7-4 in the championship final.

Salem sophomore Caiden Hart earned his way to the top of podium at 106 pounds.
