Flati lifts Beavers

From Staff Reports

CALCUTTA–Chase Flati scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Beaver Local boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Maysville in a Division II sectional final Saturday at Beaver Local High School.

The third-seeded Beavers (10-4-4) advance to take on second-seeded Minerva in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Harrison Central High School.

“This is a huge step for us,” Beaver Local coach Joe Zirillo said. “We’re trying to build a winning culture here and winning a sectional in a big stepping stone for us to build on.”

Flati’s goal came 10 minutes into the 15-minute overtime period. Logan Winland provided the assist with a header. Flati then cut around his defender and deposited his shot in the back of the net.

Alex Miller got the Beavers on the board in the first half off an assist from Flati. Maysville came back to tie things up at the 25 minute mark of the second half.

Zirillo gave ample praise to his defense, which has allowed just one goal in the last three matches.

“Those guys have been stellar for us all season, especially during the last three games,” Zirillo said.

The Beavers and Lions met at midseason, with the Beavers coming away with a 2-1 victory.

“It’s going to be a good match Tuesday,” Zirillo said. “Minerva is always a tough team and they are very senior-heavy.”
